What a report is
A Report Is Your List Plus the FLIS Data You Choose
Most NSN work starts with a list: the lines on an RFQ, the items in a solicitation, a parts list, or the NSNs in a client project. A report matches each NSN or NIIN on that list to its FLIS record and returns the data tables you picked, organized in one file.
Your list
NSNs or NIINs, pasted in or added from the Search Tool.
Your tables
Any of 21 FLIS data tables, from identification to packaging.
Your report
One tab per table and one row per record, ready to download as an Excel spreadsheet or PDF.
What you can do
Quote, Source, and Check a Whole List in One Run
Reports fits any job that arrives as a list of NSNs. Choose the tables that match the work and get one file back.
Prepare quotes line by line
Pull identification, management, and part data for every NSN on an RFQ, including unit of issue and the unit price recorded in FLIS.
- Identification
- Management
- Part
Find registered suppliers for each NSN
See every part number and CAGE code recorded against each item, with CAGE status, so you know which companies to contact for pricing.
- Part
Match solicitation lines to specs
Pull each item's decoded characteristics, its requirement statements and clear-text replies, to compare every line against a specification.
- Characteristics
- Identification
Catch cancelled and replaced items
Check a parts list for cancellation and replacement history and related NSNs before it reaches a quote or a purchase order.
- Cancelled NIIN
- Standardization
Plan shipping and packaging
Get freight classes, hazardous material codes, packaging requirements, and unit pack weights and dimensions for every item on a shipment.
- Freight
- Packaging
- DSS weight and cube
Build datasets for analysis
Pull the same tables across hundreds of NSNs into one workbook, then spot-check any row in the Search Tool for free.
- Any of the 21 tables
How it works
From List to Report in Three Steps
There's nothing to install and no file to format. If you can copy a column of NSNs, you can create a report.
Paste your list
Give the report a name, then paste NSNs or NIINs separated by spaces, commas, or line breaks. Use 13-digit NSNs or 9-digit NIINs, with or without dashes.
- There's no cap on how many NSNs or NIINs you include.
- Start a list from any Search Tool record with Add to List.
Choose your data
Pick from 21 FLIS data tables, from item identification to freight and packaging. Each table shows what it covers before you add it, so your report holds only what the job needs.
- Choose one table or all 21.
- Save it as a draft and finish later.
Run it and download
Run the report, then download it as an Excel spreadsheet (.xlsx) with one tab per table, or as a print-ready PDF. Downloads are free on every plan.
- Each table you chose gets its own tab, with the NIIN in column A.
- The PDF shows the date and time the report ran.
Save drafts and run templates
Every report stays in your Reports list with its status and the date it last ran. Save a draft to finish later, or run a saved report again when the same list comes back.
Try it with a list you already have.

Questions
Common Questions
What is an NSN report?
An NSN report is a single file of FLIS data for a list of National Stock Numbers. With Reports, you paste NSNs or NIINs, choose which FLIS data tables to include, and download the results for the whole list as an Excel spreadsheet or PDF.
What does NSN stand for?
NSN stands for National Stock Number. It's the 13-digit number that identifies an item of supply in the federal supply system: a 4-digit Federal Supply Class (FSC) followed by the 9-digit National Item Identification Number (NIIN).
What's the difference between an NSN and a NIIN?
The NIIN is the 9-digit number that identifies the item, and the NSN adds the 4-digit FSC in front of it. Both point to the same item, so Reports accepts either. For example, NSN 5961-01-234-5678 has the NIIN 012345678.
How do I look up an NSN?
For one item, use the Search Tool. Search by NSN, NIIN, part number, or CAGE code and open the full record, free and unlimited. For a whole list, create a report. To look up NSNs from your own software, use the API.
What is the purpose of an NSN?
An NSN gives each item in the federal supply system one standard identifier, so everyone who buys, stocks, ships, or supplies that item can refer to it the same way.
Are FSN and NSN the same?
Not quite. FSN stands for Federal Stock Number, the 11-digit format used before 1974. The NSN replaced it that year by adding a 2-digit country code, which created the 9-digit NIIN and the 13-digit NSN used today.
Can I create a report from part numbers or CAGE codes?
No. Reports starts from NSNs and NIINs. Part numbers and CAGE codes come back inside tables such as PART. To start from a part number or CAGE code, use the Search Tool, or the API to look up part numbers in bulk.
Is there a limit to how many NSNs a report can include?
No. There's no cap on how many NSNs or NIINs you can include or copy and paste in a report.
What formats can I download?
An Excel spreadsheet (.xlsx) with one tab for each table you chose, or a print-ready PDF. Downloads are free on every plan.
Can I save a report and run it again?
Yes. Every report is saved to your Reports list. Save a draft to finish later, or run a completed report again whenever you need it.
Does running a report use credits?
Yes. Running a report uses credits from the same balance as the API. Searching, viewing records, and downloading your reports are free. See pricing for what each plan includes.
Is OpenFLIS part of the Defense Logistics Agency or the government?
No. OpenFLIS is a product of Synergetics Inc., a private company. Our team built and manages the government's FLIS data, but OpenFLIS isn't a government service and isn't sponsored or endorsed by any government agency.
